Pianist Harold Mabern’s take on the Jackson 5’s ‘I Want You Back’ is propelled on a non-stop rhythm courtesy of Idris Muhammad and fiery trumpet from Lee Morgan. On the flip is Indianapolis group Funk Inc. Highly rated by DJs around the world, their ‘Sister Janie’ – clearly influenced by James Brown’s ‘Sex Machine’ – is as funky as jazz ever got.
